Red Sox think Yankees will retaliate for Austin plunking

After two benches-clearing incidents with one resulting in a brawl, one would think the latest feud in the Yankees-Red Sox rivlary is over.

Boston doesn’t think so.

“If they’re like us, the clubhouse is our second home. We need to protect our home, so there will be something soon. If not this series, maybe in New York.”

On the contrary, Yankees manager Aaron Boone doesn’t see his team doing anything in retaliation after Sox reliever Joe Kelly beamed Tyler Austin to start a brawl. He wasn’t a fan of the altercation in the first place, as he saw Austin’s slide that insinuated everything as clean.

“No. I think it’s probably over with,” he said. “Yeah, I think it’s over with. We’re just happy to come out of here with a win.”

“Austin has a lot of power to right field,” Kelly said. “Our whole game plan is sliders in the dirt and to pitch him in. I threw a pitch inside and it hit him. It’s one of those that got away.”

Kelly’s statement was media friendly, but the video evidence shows clear intention on his part. After starting the at-bat with a slider for a strike, Kelly’s second pitch to Austin was a two-seam runner inside that nearly clipped him in the gut. Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt, who Austin clipped with his slide to start the night’s festivities, is one Boston player that doesn’t want to see anymore fighting. He didn’t think it was going to happen in the first place.

“I thought it was over,” he said. “We’re not trying to fight those guys over there. They’re big. It escalated quickly.”

“I probably said something I shouldn’t have said at the start,” Holt admitted. “But it was a bad slide and I think he knows that now.”
